Solo: A Different Kind of Love Story

Solo: A Different Kind of Love StoryWith Solo: A Star Wars Story hitting the DVD shelves this week I want to talk about the missed opportunities of the film. In many ways, it is amazing that Solo is as good as it is considering the trouble production history the film had. However, the film still feels safe as it ticks off all the standard tropes and key moments of Star Wars history you’d expect. I believe, with a one tiny changes, Solo could have been a much more interesting film.

Faerie Tales

Faerie StoriesThis week’s Microcosms took on a bit of a Scottish theme – by accident more than design – as the three suggested elements were Fiery Redhead, Highland Estate and Tragedy. You can insert your own joke about the last one.

Back to the writing, these three elements inspired my story Faerie Stories below and achieved the runners up spot in the weekly contest. You can check out the story below the break

A Simple Plan

A Simple PlanMicrocosms 117 took a slightly different form. Instead of the usual slot machine, we had to include a judge’s favour line from the past few months and write a story around that. I’ll explain more in the author’s notes but this style of competition doesn’t suit my writing style but I settle on the line:

#106 – Uttering a simple prayer, she scattered Gloria’s ashes on the breeze, returning her beloved friend to her native soil.

Below the line you’ll see how well I managed to include the line in my story A Simple Plan. Let me know in the comments below if you enjoyed it.

2018 Superbowl Trailers

Last night was the L!! Super Bowl and the best bit about the event – for me anyway – is the glut of trailers released during the half time break. This year I wanted to highlight the five trailers I felt were the most important or interesting. They will all be posted below in a you tube format with a brief bit of discussion for each and there is only one place I can start:

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Due out in just over 3 months this is the first bit of footage we’ve seen from the troubled film and this trailer is a bit…well meh to be honest. A fuller trailer is due later today so maybe it’ll create more excitement but at the moment Solo is not looking good. I want my Star Wars films to be more than meh!

A New Looking Website & Other Updates

A New Looking Website & Other UpdatesThings have changed around here. You probably have noticed. I’ve ditched the old blog format and gone for something that looks a bit more websity so it seems suitable to do a general round-up of all the changes and other news that is happening.

Website Update

As I said back in January I wanted to change this website away from the blog format into something that focus much more on my creative writing. I feel the new format does this with three out of the six menu options focusing on my writing. I’ve also added links to my Author’s Notes article below each of the stories that have one.

The biggest change has been to the blog where lots of my old categories have been slimmed down into a single category called General Musings. This will allow me to focus on my Author’s Notes articles.

For those who liked my TV and Movie Reviews can still find them under Old Projects and I’m hoping to upload all the reviews to this site shortly. Other things I want to add to the site is changing all the links to the colour red but this is a major re-coding job and will take time.

Writing News

I’m afraid there is no good news in regarding to my writing. In about a week I received emails saying I’d been rejected/lost four writing competitions. Of course it wasn’t easy reading those emails but these things happen. I’ve still got a couple of stories out in the big wide world which I’m hopefully will be well received.

On the self publishing front I published Victory Sandwich, my entry into the #LastLineFirst comp from March and I’ve got another piece of Flash Fiction coming shortly so look out for that.

Writing News – Submissions, Rejections & Performing

Writing News - Submissions, Rejections & PerformingIn an attempt to keep this blog vaguely up to date and with more a focus on my writing I thought I should talk about what I’ve been up to and what is coming up. Let’s start with up coming performance bookings.

Performances

I’ve got a couple of readings coming up over the next few months. First on the 7th of February I’ll be reading at Woo’er with Words XI at Coffee on Woo’er. As it is February the theme is love so I’m planning on reading a new piece that I’m presently working on called My Missing Rock but if I don’t get it finished in time I’ll fall back on the old favourites A Mother’s Love and Drawn Memories.

Then in March I’ll be at West Lothian Write as usual. No idea what I’m going to read yet. At the last one i said I would read Remembering the Sand but I’m not sure anymore.

Changes Are A Coming

Recently I renew the domain name for this site for another two years and I thought it was the prefect opportunity to take stock and work out the future of the website. It is safe to say that this website, especially the blog, doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It is also fair to say that a lot of my blog postings are kind of random and probably not that interesting.

As I still want a website base for my writing The World of The Red Fleece will still be here but I would like to make some changes and I would like YOUR opinions on what I should change.

Below the break you’ll find the details of what I’m wanting to do and the areas where I would like your ideas.

Another What have I Been Up To Post

As you may have noticed I haven’t been posting much on here recently. This has been down to a number of things (mostly good stuff!) however, I now have more time so there will be more posts coming. However, let’s go over what I’ve been up to while I was away.

Revamping This Website

Another What have I Been Up To PostThe changes aren’t huge but I’ve been re-ordering What I Have Written Page into two new pages. One for My Short Stories and one for my Movie and TV Reviews, which splits down into years while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Doctor Who and Homeland all have their own pages as I have written so many reviews on them. Check them and let me know what you think of them in the comments below.

I’ve also been busy writing new reviews for Culture Jam with six already published so far this year and another four (at the time of writing) waiting to be published. To read my reviews so far check out the 2014 TV and Movies Reviews page.

What I’ve Been Up To

Some of you (if anyone is still checking this page) will notice I haven’t been updating this page for a while. This has been due to other projects and the “day job” getting in the way. However, don’t worry this blog will be back up and running soon with lots of Halloween themed posts and stories, Doctor Who stuff for the anniversary in November but first let’s with a quick break down of what I’ve been up to!

What I've Been Up ToTV Reviews

Outside of work this is what I’ve been working on most. I now have two TV series blogs on Culture Jam for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Homeland. It is safe to say I’m enjoying one of them more than the other – I’ll let you read the reviews to guess which one! To help you here are my reviews so far (with more due to be posted soon)

You can also check out my thoughts on Homeland Series Two here as well!

Movie Reviews

I also reviewed a couple of movies as well. Monsters University, the unneeded prequel to Monsters Inc, is available now while my thoughts on Sunshine on Leith will be up soon. Even if you don’t care about the movie check out my attempts to crowbar in the name of every song from the musical into my review and the damage I did to the English language in the process!

Short Stories

What I've Been Up ToFinally, I’ve got three short stories due to be printed soon. Each story will get their own full Author’s Notes post when they are published.

The first is called Drawn Memories and will be printed in the magazine Far Off Places and should be due out by the end of October. You can read the parent story of Drawn Memories, Pens, on the website right now.

The second is called Black and White Night and will be published soon in the magazine [Untitled]. This tale is a bit of an experiment as the whole story is told in black and white with minimum dialogue. As the magazine has a very small circulation, the story will probably appear on the website around the turn of the year.

The third story Circus of the Wave will be published by Anti-Zine towards the end of November. Written for their circus themed issue, this story is exciting with a fantasy twisted. If you would like to come to the launch party for Anti-Zine you can find the details on either the Facebook event or on the Summerhall website.

Finally, my book of 50 Word Stories is almost finished its first draft and should be available to buy for Christmas. Hopefully a nice wee stoking filler!

Most importantly, there will be more posts soon…I promise!

A Writing Update

It has been a few weeks since I posted anything about my own personal writing. However, this doesn’t mean nothing has been happening.

Two New Culture Jam Reviews

Writing UpdateYes, two new reviews have been posted, including my first movie review. I really enjoyed The World’s End, the new movie from Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost however, like their previous movies Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, I think The World’s End will get better with every watch. When I do see the movie again I will post a follow-up review here on the Another Serving of Culture Jam thread of this website.. Please don’t hold your breath as it’ll have to be when the movie comes out on DVD now and that is a while away.

My second review was of The Culture Show at Edinburgh – Funny Women programme. Sadly the show was a disappointment as it wasn’t funny enough and offered no new answers to the old question of why aren’t there more women in stand up. On top of this the review was quite difficult to write as I was all too aware of the irony of a male review criticising a show about women in an overall male profession. I could be over thinking this however.

Due to a problem with the Culture Jam website you can’t comment on either review. However, if you want to discuss my review please comment below or tweet me.

No More 5o Word Short Stories For A While

At least published on here. In fact I’m surround by 50 word short stories at the moment as by Christmas I’m planning on publishing a 50 Word Short Story collection. At the moment it is called 50 and will include fifty stories including Fogged and Departures that I have already published on this site. As I want most of the stories to be new, there will be no more published on here till at least after Christmas. This will change if I win The Scottish Book Trust’s 50 Word Short Story Competition but I don’t think that’ll happen in a while.

Three Readings

Writing UpdateFinally I will be appearing at three readings over the next few months. The most exciting of these is the Linlithgow Book Festival Open Mic Night as it is both a book Festival and my home town. Not sure what story I’ll read yet but as soon as I know I’ll tweet about it.

The other two readings will be at West Lothian Write on the 30th of August and the 29th of November, both happening at the Howden Park Centre in Livingston. Again I’m not sure what I’ll be reading in November but on Friday I’m reading Drawn Memories. I’ll be posting about this story a lot more quite soon. I’ll say no more!
