In the build up to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the cast and crew talked about how it was a 1970s style conspiracy thriller disguised as a superhero movie. For example President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige in a preview article for SFX Magazine said
we really want to make a ’70s political thriller masquerading as a big superhero movie
The film achieves this, especially with the casting of Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce the star of many 70s conspiracy movies. For me the issue is that the film never escapes the clichés of the comic book movie.
BELOW THE BREAK THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER AND THE DARK KNIGHT
This post contains spoilers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World
Ever since The Avengers came out in 2012 ( I refuse to use the British title for the film because I can tell the difference between Hulk and Emma Peel!) Marvel have had a story telling problem. Now all the avengers are all friends why would they just call each other up if they ever found themselves in trouble. Until Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel had been dealing with this problem easily.
As you may have noticed I haven’t been posting much on here recently. This has been down to a number of things (mostly good stuff!) however, I now have more time so there will be more posts coming. However, let’s go over what I’ve been up to while I was away.
Revamping This Website
The changes aren’t huge but I’ve been re-ordering What I Have Written Page into two new pages. One for My Short Stories and one for my Movie and TV Reviews, which splits down into years while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Doctor Who and Homeland all have their own pages as I have written so many reviews on them. Check them and let me know what you think of them in the comments below.
I’ve also been busy writing new reviews for Culture Jam with six already published so far this year and another four (at the time of writing) waiting to be published. To read my reviews so far check out the 2014 TV and Movies Reviews page.
